Women Disappear From Billboards and Magazine Covers for #NotThere Campaign
Yesterday, which was International Women’s Day, you may have noticed hundreds of posts tagged #NotThere across social media, with a blank space where the image of a woman should be. The campaign, an initiative from both the Clinton and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to bring awareness to the fact that even though it is 2015, the United States is simply “not there yet” when it comes to gender equality. We can certainly pat ourselves on the back for other developments and achievements, but when it comes to something as basic as men and women being paid the same amount of money for the same amount of work, we’ve totally failed.
For the social media campaign, #NotThere asked women to change their Twitter and Instagram profile pictures to a generic silhouette. Meanwhile, companies like Conde Nast, Refinery 29, Kate Spade, and H&M joined the campaign. Some brands replaced the women in their ad campaigns with the words “not-there.org,” while H&M replaced their mannequins with the words in their windows to both draw attention and invite people to learn more about the cause.
