Women's health groups are trolling Paul Ryan after his retirement announcement

Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan confirmed Wednesday that he would not seek re-election in the upcoming midterms, an announcement that won him a tribute from President Trump — and celebration on the part of some women’s health advocates.

It all stems from the Republicans’ efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, as well as criticism that Ryan was helping to strip away maternity care benefits as Congress worked to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Suffice it to say, there’s no love lost between the Wisconsin congressman and pro-abortion-rights organizations. Both NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood‘s Generation Action campaign issued celebratory tweets after Ryan’s announcement, which the former called the “first positive thing for women [he’s] done in his 19 years in office.”

Planned Parenthood, meanwhile, used a GIF from singer Janelle Monáe‘s bold new “PYNK” video — which features pants designed to look like a vagina — as a response. Executive vice president Dawn Laguens also had a few choice words about Ryan’s upcoming departure.

As The Cut reports, NARAL also issued a statement responding to the Ryan news.

“People across America can now look forward to a time where Paul Ryan is not working every day to undermine our fundamental freedoms, including reproductive freedom,” the group said.
