These Crazy Zwift Stats Are Almost Too Wild to Believe
Lots of people like to Zwift. To date more than 1.6 million riders have clocked more than 600 million miles around Watopia and its myriad courses offered by the online training and gaming platform.
Some of these folks really like Zwift. Like really, maybe it’s time for an intervention.
Tim “Bacon” Searle is one such rider. As of this writing, the Australian Zwift and Giant ambassador has clocked more than 92,000 miles—that’s 3.7 times around the globe—and 3,138,849 feet of climbing on Zwift.
And if you think that’s unbelievable, check out these equally outrageous statistics racked up by some of Zwift’s most fanatical Watopians, as collected by Zwift Power.
622.10 Miles in a Single Day
Yep, more than 600 miles on the trainer. Kudos for that one go to Kurt Pauwels of Race3R, who wrapped up this epic indoor outing on Saturday, December 21, 2019. The ride was an attempt at the 24-hour distance record, which he bagged by nearly 16 miles. Pauwels pedaled for 24:17:48 moving time, getting off the bike for less than 7 minutes during the entire stretch. He averaged 25.6 miles per hour and burned off about 27 Whopper’s worth of calories.
Nearly 2,000 Miles in a Single Session
You get bathroom breaks and catnaps, but otherwise, you’ve gotta stay planted on your trainer if you want to set an official Zwift Distance Record. And the winners have pulled some massive rides around the island.
On the women’s side, self-described “cycling-mad Dutchie” Jasmijn Muller logged 1,135.9 miles in 62 hours, 4 minutes, and 30 seconds on her Specialized S-Works Shiv and Wahoo KICKR trainer from February 18 to February 21 in 2017.
On the men’s side, Chris Hopkinson of Race 3R-Team Hoppo smashed the Indoor Trainer World Record with a mind-blowing multiday ride that lasted nearly six days as he cranked out 1,952.98 miles and 50,381 feet of elevation in 116 hours, 22 minutes, and 51 seconds.
Alpe du Zwift 8.5 times in 7:34:45
vEveresting—where you ride up and down the same hill in the Zwift universe over and over to accumulate the total vertical gain of Mount Everest—is most definitely a thing. So much so that people aren’t just content to accomplish the leg-breaking feat, they want to set records within records. Like Sean Vintin of VeloClub who rode 140.1 miles up and down Alpe du Zwift eight and a half times in just 7 hours, 34 minutes, and 45 seconds to nab the Fastest vEverest time on December 23, 2018.
Triple vEverest in 3 Days
Bagging a single 29,029 foot vEverest is so 2018. On November 8, 2019, Ross Duncan climbed Box Hill on Zwift’s London course 197 times in 73 hours and 23 minutes to rack up 88,691 feet—the equivalent of three Mount Everests—of total elevation gain, over 757.48 miles. (For those checking Strava, Duncan’s total bike and moving time include spinning to the hill and back.)
“RAAM” in Under 10 Days
In his run up to taking a shot at 2020 Race Across America (RAAM), Danish ultra cyclist Michael Knudsen rode the distance virtually on Zwift…in a shopping mall. On October 28, 2019 he successfully completed 3,108.13 miles in less than 10 days total time (just under seven days pedaling time). In doing so, he also set the Zwift record for Fastest 5,000K.
