YMCA across Las Vegas valley see enrollment spike during heat wave

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — It was a busy Tuesday afternoon at the Centennial Hills Y on Buffalo Drive and Deer Springs Way. Executive director Emily Sowers said the triple-digit heat entices even more people to use their facilities.

“Y membership is all-inclusive and so when you become a member, you have access to all our amenities,” Sowers explained. “Come in and utilize the Y, take a fitness class, swim in our pools, workout, play basketball or pickleball and that is available all summer long.”

Enrollment numbers have spiked when it comes to classes and programs for kids, adults and seniors and the YMCA has become a one-stop shop to get active and have fun all while staying cool.

“When families are looking for something, they don’t want to be cooped up inside and have the opportunity to do something while they’re able to stay cool and beat the heat advisory warnings that we’re seeing on a daily basis now,” Sowers added. “So we’ve seen big jumps in our membership numbers, summer camp and swim lesson registration as well.”

Senior Aquatics Director Adriana Saiz said families enjoy having both indoor and outdoor swim options.

“Not only because of the heat but are also worried about sun exposure for their children,” Saiz remarked. “So, they look forward to the fact that we do have indoor lessons available for their children so they can be safe from the sun.”

She said inquiries for swim classes have jumped from April to June and it’s not only the kids taking lessons but seniors too.

“One thing with our outdoor lessons, we will generally have them in the morning time, that way it’s not the peak heat of the day and that will help a little bit with the cooling and we have shade structures all around the pool for the families watching the swim lessons take place,” Saiz said.

There is still open availability for activities at all YMCA locations and kids camp enrollment is also open but limited.

There are four Y’s in the valley — Centennial Hills, Durango Hills on Durango and Gowan. There is also Skyview in North Las Vegas on Centennial and Pecos and Heinrich across from Meadows Mall. Membership includes all these locations.
