New York Times names Portland-area pizzeria among best in US

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The New York Times released a list of the top 22 pizza places in the United States on Tuesday — listing one Portland-area pizzeria with an Asian twist.

According to the New York Times, great pizza can be found anywhere in the United States thanks to a “craft pizza renaissance.”

“From Southern California to the Mississippi Delta to the Pacific Northwest, the bounty of great pies has never been bigger,” the New York Times said.

Representing the Pacific Northwest, Beaverton’s Hapa Pizza was named among the top 22 pizzerias in the U.S.

Hapa Pizza began as a farmers market pop-up before finding its permanent home in 2023 on Southwest Broadway Street.

“True to its name — a term for multiracial people of Asian or Pacific Islander descent — the restaurant works in multiple culinary traditions,” the New York Times said. “The pies stay faithful to the Neapolitan canon of pleasingly charred and chewy dough, but also to vivid Asian flavors, as in the pho or Thai green curry pies.”

With bánh mì, ph?, and Kalua pork pies, the New York Times said Hapa manages to get a lot on their pizzas without seeming “gimmicky or overloaded.”

Topping the list was Amar Pizza in Hamtramck, Mich., Bird Pizzeria in Charlotte, N.C., Bungalow by Middle Brow in Chicago, Ill., and City House in Nashville, Tenn.
