You'll Never Find Green Peppers In A Multi-Pepper Pack – Here's Why

If you’re trying to eat the rainbow, it might be difficult finding a bell pepper pack that suits your needs. One quick trip through the produce aisle may have you noticing that it’s impossible to find bell peppers in a multi-pack that include all four bell pepper colors: green, yellow, orange, and red.

It’s easy to find a bell pepper pack, but most include just three colors: yellow, orange, and red. Green peppers are typically nearby in a carousel all alone.

So, why are green bell peppers never included in multi-pepper packs? The answer is also mostly green in nature.

Why Green Bell Peppers Are Never In A Multi-Pepper Pack?

One cursory glance around a grocery store and you’ll see packs of peppers, but none with green. Why is this? The answer is fairly straightforward: green peppers are cheaper than other colors of bell peppers.

Because green peppers are unripened versions of their colorful counterparts, they are up to 40% cheaper than yellow, orange, or red bell peppers, because they cost less to produce. Yellow, orange, and red peppers are sweeter and take longer to produce, so they cost more money.

From an economics perspective, having a green pepper in a pack with other colors may make consumers feel as if they aren’t getting a good deal. Often, purchasing a few green peppers on their own amounts to less than a pack of yellow, orange, or red.

But just because you might not be able to find green peppers with other colors in a single pack doesn’t mean that bell pepper consumption is slowing down. According to a 2022 study, the per capita consumption of fresh bell peppers in the United States was about 11.1 pounds with California, Georgia, and Florida leading bell pepper production in the U.S.

How To Store Bell Peppers

Bell peppers are best stored in the refrigerator to maintain maximum freshness. According to FoodSafety.gov’s FoodKeeper app, developed by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, bell peppers can last in the refrigerator between four and 14 days when refrigerated properly from the date of purchase.

Can You Freeze Bell Peppers?

If you’ve purchased a pack of bell peppers and have one or two that you do not need to use right away, freezing bell peppers is a great option. According to FoodSafety.gov’s FoodKeeper app, developed by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, bell peppers can safely last six to eight months in the freezer if frozen from the date of purchase.
