Young volunteers get to work at Northwest Side nature preserve ahead of Earth Day
CHICAGO — At a nature preserve in Jefferson Park on Saturday, a group of young volunteers got to work beautifying, mulching trails and planting native species, while pulling the invasive ones.
“We’re helping nature we’re helping plants grow it’s also relaxing,” volunteer Spencer Shepard said.
It’s part of the Honeycomb Project, a nonprofit that organizes volunteering events designed for families, teaching kids about the power and rewards of service.

Sarah Anderson, who has been leading the effort for the past 7 years, said it is all to help increase the biodiversity and health of the natural environment.
“Hopefully by kids coming out and volunteering in a forest preserve district, they start to connect with nature and realize the beauty that’s all around them, even in an urban area, Anderson said.
