YouTube star re-creates prom after transitioning into a girl
Last time YouTuber Nikita Dragun went to prom, she was wearing a tux.
She may be out of high school, but Dragun still managed to re-create her prom night to match her gender identity in a video that’s already drawing praise (not to mention over 500,000 views) from her fans.
Dragun announced her transition to her followers in 2015 and has been very open about it ever since. She’s shared stories of getting bullied at her high school in Virginia in the past. A prom re-creation offers the chance at new memories — and photos that she can look back on and enjoy. “I feel like this is granting a wish of mine of creating and reenacting my prom, because last time I went to prom, I was wearing a tux. It was a different life, let’s just say that,” Dragun explains in the video.
To help her create the prom night of her dreams, Dragun enlisted the help of designer Michael Costello. In the video, she tries on three dresses before settling on a pink tulle ball gown worthy of the Met Gala. “I feel like a full-on princess. This is the prom moment,” Dragun says after finding the perfect dress.
With the pink dress selected, she decided to accessorize with rose gold makeup and a neon pink wig. Stylist Arianna Chaylene styled the pink wig into a classic chignon, complete with a tiara. Of course, she also did her own full glam. Dragun’s date, the ultimate accessory, arrived to coordinate in a velvet pink tux and pink hair.
This year has been big for Dragun. “I graduated college. I got my official license with that ‘female’ title on it. I have a lot of big things happening,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “But that also doesn’t stop me from looking back and reflecting.” She decided to make the prom video to live out a fantasy from her past. “I’ve always wanted to be the prom queen. I wanted to live that American high school fantasy. But when I went to prom, I was wearing a tuxedo. So this video was my moment to live my prom queen fantasy,” Dragun says.
Dragun works to keep her followers involved in her transition, with regular “Transformation Tuesday” videos that document her journey with plastic surgery, hormones, and reflections on life as a trans woman. Earlier this year, she revisited her pre-transition vlogs. “I’m more myself than I ever have been,” she says.
What else from her past might Dragun revisit as a woman? Anything is possible, she says. “I’m absolutely looking forward to continuing my pop-star lifestyle and doing so as an empowered woman.” Now, she even has the prom photos to match.
