The artisan mug crafters behind “Feyoncé ” may have put a ring on it but Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is telling them to stick a fork in it.
The singer, who has sold more than 118 million albums as a solo artist, had her lawyers sent a threatening letter to a independent seller on the crafty website.

TMZ reports that Beyoncé people felt the Feyoncé pun was too close to the singer’s own eponymous brand:
The singer felt the pun was more than coincidental — right down to the accent on the last “e” — so her lawyers fired off a letter to the company crying foul … and then threatening them.

Etsy quickly complied, pulling down the Feyoncé mugs. However, TMZ notes that Feyoncé is a bit of a crafty hydra (or should that be DIHydra?). You take down one Feyoncé store and several more pop up, selling sweaters, earrings, and yes, other mugs.

For its part, Etsy has a number of disclaimers addressing intellectual property and copyright infringement issues. On an explainer blog post, Etsy says they do not target specific sellers but are legally obliged to comply with requests to remove items that allegedly infringe on a company or individual’s intellectual property:
“Many sellers express concern that a competitor has reported them. However, we don’t accept notices of infringement by just anybody – only from the intellectual property owner or the owner’s authorized agent (referred to here as the “complaining party”). We also require that the complaining party provide statements of good faith made under the penalty of perjury. There could be costly penalties if a complaining party makes material misrepresentations about the infringement. These claims are very serious matters.”
