Bring the Galaxy to You with a $10 Globe Light for Earth Day
On April 22nd we celebrate Earth Day, and we think it’s the perfect opportunity to appreciate some of the wonders of Mother Nature. This globe light is made with little more than a balloon and plaster strips, and showcases the majesty of the night sky.
An LED, placed inside the plaster globe, will shine the light of a million bright starts and truly cast an etherial light in any room you place it.
Materials:
Plaster strips
Balloons
Battery operated votive LED light
Tools:
Awl
Bowl of warm water
Instructions:
1. Blow up a balloon and tape it down to a protective plastic surface, so your table doesn’t get plastery.
2. Cut several 8″ plaster strips.
3. One by one, dip plaster strips into warm water and smooth them out onto the balloon’s surface, covering the entire balloon.
4. Wet your hands and smooth the plaster on the balloon, creating a finished plaster surface.
5. Use your last strip to make a “rim” and smooth it onto the opening at the bottom of the balloon. This will help your globe ‘sit’ when dry. Let plaster dry, overnight if possible.
6. Pop a hole in your balloon and let the air escape slowly so that it pulls away from the plaster globe easily.
7. Using the awl, gently poke holes as stars into your globe. Pushing in different depths with the awl will make stars in different sizes.
8. Place the globe on top of a battery operated LED votive.
…and see the stars shine through!
