Can you think of anything better than serving up dessert in a bowl made out of chocolate that you can eat? We can’t! It’s beyond genius and we’re so excited to share with you what we’ve learned about how to make one.

Materials:

  • Balloons, latex-free, washed and dried

  • Chocolate pieces, preferably Candy Melts

  • Wax paper

  • Cookie sheet

  • Non stick spray

Tools:

  • Spoon or whisk

  • Double boiler

Instructions:

1. Blow up balloons to the size of ‘bowl’ - make sure they can fit easily in your chocolate pot. You don’t want then ‘over-taut’ as the heat of the chocolate could potentially burst them. Which could result in a situation a little bit like this:

So, best to keep them on the smaller side.

2. Spray the balloons with a non-stick spray to aid in the removal of the balloons.

3. Lay a piece of wax paper on a cookie sheet.

4. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler, stirring gently to make it smooth.

5. Spoon out a dollop of chocolate on to the wax paper to make a little disc, this is the base of the bowl. Let it set.

6. Set the chocolate on a surface, off the boiler, to dip the balloons.

7. Dip the balloons, one by one, into the chocolate, giving it a twist to cover all around. Whisk the chocolate in between dips to keep it the right consistency. If it starts to set, return it to the heat briefly to allow it to re-melt.

8. Set the dipped balloons on top of the chocolate discs and chill them in the refrigerator on the cookie sheet.

9. After 30 minutes, pop the balloons with a pin so the air leaks out slowly.  This will pull the balloons away from the edges.

10. Gently pull the popped balloons out of the chocolate bowls and discard them.

11. Fill them with whipped cream, fruit of your choice or ice cream. Chill the bowls until serving.

As the most decadent course of a meal, dessert is often about going over the top and luxuriating in pleasures that speak to your playful side. Desserts should bring a smile to your face.  Rarely do people light up in a restaurant as much as they do when the dessert menu makes its way to the table - the joy and anticipation is undeniable.
