Etsy Designer's $145 Harry Potter Ring Is a Surprise Hit
(Miranda Scott/Etsy)
It takes a real Harry Potter fan to spend more than $100 on a ring that simply resembles the tiny Golden Snitch ball from the fantasy series. That didn’t stop a creative designer on Etsy from selling an engagement ring on the site made of sterling silver and topaz.
And perhaps it makes sense. If people are willing to shell out thousands of dollars for an engagement ring shaped like a football, why can’t two devoted Harry Potter fans enjoy a $145 ring crafted in honor of the legendary (albeit fictional) game of Quidditch?
On second thought, it’s clearly not that hard to find a buyer, as the first run of the rings have already sold out. Alchemy House Jewelry designer Miranda Scott writes:
“[D]ue to the increase in orders due to the Buzzfeed article, I can no longer guarantee delivery before Valentine’s Day, and rush orders are not being taken for earlier than that date.”

And unlike that previously mentioned football shaped ring, the Golden Snitch inspired jewelry is subtle and wouldn’t appear out of the ordinary to the casual observer. As Bustle’s Erin Mayer notes:
“The sterling silver and topaz showpiece is actually rather elegant and doesn’t scream “FANDOM!!!!!” at the top of its lungs, so it might be just the thing for an adult Harry devotee.”

The ring first drew major attention when it caught the eye of this BuzzFeed writer. Now, with fans clamoring for their own personalized version of the ring, Scott says she is doubling down on her commitment to being an artist rather than simply a purveyor of a product. She even took time to craft this little literary note to potential buyers and author J.K. Rowling:
At this ring, have a look
It was inspired by a book
If you’re a wizard or witch
You could use it to get hitched
In gold or silver it may be bought
but official merchandise, it is not
Allow 3-4 weeks for me to make it for you,
and J.K Rowling, if you’re reading this - please don’t sue
