How One Artist Carves Sculptures Out of Books
Book lovers beware, what you are about to see will either fill you with awe or horror, perhaps a mixture of both. New York based contemporary artist Brian Dettmer creates exquisite works of art out of books and carves amazing figures, scenes, and patterns into the pages and binding. According to his website, he is widely renowned for “detailed and innovative sculptures with books and other forms of antiquated media.” Dettmer’s work has been exhibited internationally at some of the most prestigious museums, including the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. and the Wellcome Collection in London. He is referred to as the “book surgeon” due to his use of “knives, tweezers, and surgical tools” to coax these layered images of out books. Dettmer even describes his process of working as dissecting the book. Even more remarkable is the fact that is “nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted, only removed.” Browse through these photos of his artwork and see for yourself how art can truly be found anywhere.
