Transform a Plain Cake into a Dazzling Dessert

A plain, boring white cake from the supermarket isn’t much to look at, no matter how tasty it is, and we don’t always have the time (or patience) to whip up a beautiful masterpiece from scratch. This is when you find a way to work with what you’ve got, and dress up that store bought cake!

When you pick up a plain cake (we’re big fans of coconut here, so ours was simply covered with shreds of it), buy a bag of multi-colored hard candies too! Or, if you’re anything like us, you probably have a left over bag of Conversation Hearts lying around from Valentine’s Day, so save some pennies and use those. You can create a pattern or an ombré effect, by layering different colors all the way up the sides of your cake.

It’s a fun, easy and inexpensive way to add a little something to what would otherwise be a cake severely lacking in personality. We can’t have that!

Materials:

  • Store-bought, white cake

  • Hard candies, such as leftover Conversation Hearts

Instructions:

1. Unpack your plain, store-bought cake.

2. Separate your candies into like colors.

3. Starting at the bottom, make a ring around the cake in one solid color.

4. Add another layer, just above, in a slightly lighter color.

5. Finish with the last line around the cake in the lightest color. That way you create an ombré effect. Ideally, you would want to use candies in the same color family, but simply working darkest to lightest creates a great effect too.
