Broken Lizard Launches ‘Super Troopers 2′ Crowdfunding Campaign
The Broken Lizard comedy troupe has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise production funds for “Super Troopers 2,” 14 years after the original “Super Troopers” was released.
“Super Troopers 2″ reunites all five Troopers from the original film — Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske. The quintet played goofy Vermont state troopers with a penchant for pranks who were suddenly forced to solve a murder and bust a drug-smuggling ring. Brian Cox played their commander.
“We finally have the chance to make ‘Super Troopers 2,'” said Chandrasekhar. “But since we refused to write a sequel where the highway cops have morphed into super hero-vampires, Fox Searchlight proposed the following deal: They’ll release the film, but we have to raise all of the money. So we’ve turned to Indiegogo and our fans to prove that it’s finally time for ‘Super Troopers 2′ to get made.”
The campaign has a goal of $2 million by April 24. If the funding goal is met, pre-production on the film will begin in May, with principal photography starting this summer in the Northeast. However, if the $2 million minimum goal isn’t reached, the script goes back on the shelf.
Contributor perks include T-shirts, posters, DVDs and tickets to the premiere. Supporters can also buy participation in a Beerfest Tournament and drink against the cast; join the cast in Colorado for a legal cannabis outing; and own one of the actual patrol cars used in the new movie.
“Super Troopers” was made for $1.2 million and acquired by Searchlight at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. It grossed $23 million worldwide.
Broken Lizard also made 2004’s “Club Dread” and 2006’s “Beerfest,” which grossed $20 million. The troupe performed in “Broken Lizard Stand Up” for Comedy Central in 2010.
