Chris Evans Responds to Controversial Captain America Twist
The recently released Captain America: Steve Rogers No. 1 has caused Marvel Entertainment to be mired in controversy this week. The first issue of the new series revealed that Cap is a covert Hydra agent and has been since childhood.
This caused #SayNoToHYDRACap to trend on Twitter. Maybe the most prominent person to weigh in was Captain America himself, actor Chris Evans. He tweeted, “Hydra?!?!? #sayitaintso.” He’s probably not going to love this bit of art from @BossLogic, even if it does actually look pretty cool.

1) Captain America had been presented as a moral and honest broker of justice, not a shadowy villain.
2) His creators, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, were Jewish. To make their character, the guy who punched Hitler in the face, an ally of a Nazi organization is… frustrating.
3) It feels like more of a stunt than a storytelling decision. Nick Spencer, who wrote the issue, told the Daily Beast, regarding the backlash, “You understand that this is the kind of story designed to upset people and shock people and worry people.”
Comic book heroes are often changed to fit the whim of the writers sharing their stories, and many have urged people to be patient because it’s unlikely that Marvel will forever keep Captain America a Hydra agent. Probably true, but Spencer also told the Beast, “This has real lasting repercussions that are gonna be with us for a while.”
Comic book sales are far past their glory days, so you can understand why Marvel’s doing this. But man, it sure feels wrong. At least we’ve got the Cap we deserve in the movies.
