'Mascots' Trailer: Christopher Guest Sets His Mockumentary Sights on Rowdy Sports Mascots
Writer-director Christopher Guest and his wacky pack of actors have mockumented everything from local theater (Waiting for Guffman) to pure-bred dog competitions (Best in Show) to folk music (A Mighty Wind). And now they’re turning their silly sights on that little-known side of sports: the cutthroat world of team mascots. The appropriately-titled Mascots will debut this fall on Netflix, as well as in a limited release in theaters. Watch the first trailer above.
Like Best in Show, Guest’s comedy will revolve around a host of competitors striving to win a coveted championship in their niche field — in this case, the annual World Mascot Association’s Gold Fluffy Award. And as in real professional athletics, drugs and sex will prove to be constant threats to the sanctity of the main event, which will feature such hopefuls as Parker Posey’s gawky, dancing armadillo and Chris O’Dowd’s “bad boy of mascot-ery,” the fist.
Starring such Guest regulars as Posey, O’Dowd, Jane Lynch, Fred Willard, Ed Begley, Jr., Bob Balaban, Jennifer Coolidge, John Michael Higgins, Sarah Baker, Don Lake, Michael Hitchcock, and Zach Woods — as well as, reportedly, Guest himself as Guffman’s Corky St. Clair — Mascots will play at this September’s Toronto Film Festival before making its premiere on Netflix on Oct. 13.
