Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' Preview to Play Before 'Rogue One' in IMAX Theaters
If you’re a Christopher Nolan fan, and you’re headed to the movies this weekend, you may be in for a pleasant surprise. The Dark Knight director’s latest film, the World War II drama Dunkirk, doesn’t open until July 21 — but a five-minute prologue will be shown before select IMAX screenings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The prologue, which was reported to be in the works by Slashfilm earlier this month, was announced via an Easter egg on the official Dunkirk website: Visit the site and click on the map to see a list of theaters where the Dunkirk prologue will play.

Dunkirk, Nolan’s first-ever historical drama, tells the story of 400,000 British, Polish, and Belgian soldiers who were stranded on the French coast in May and June of 1940. Surrounded by German forces, most of the Allied troops nevertheless managed to escape, thanks to a daring sea evacuation effort later dubbed “the miracle of Dunkirk.” According to Entertainment Weekly, the prologue focuses, in turn, on three different characters: An Army private (Fionn Whitehead) carrying a wounded soldier through a pier that’s just been bombed, a pilot (Tom Hardy) trying to take down a German plane, and a local boat captain (Mark Rylance) preparing to help with the evacuation. The film also stars Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, and Harry Styles.
