'Doctor Strange' Bends Reality and Blows Minds in New Comic-Con Trailer
No question about it: The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to head into some very strange territory. During its Comic-Con panel in San Diego, Marvel Studios dropped a second, longer trailer for Doctor Strange, the maiden adventure of the so-called Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange. Initially a man of medicine, Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes a man of magic after a car accident leaves his hands broken and battered.
He’s healed, after a fashion, by a trip to the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who trains him in the mystic arts and opens his mind to the concept of multiple realities. “This doesn’t make any sense,” he murmurs as the world around him splinters like a broken mirror.
But there are stranger things still to come in the Scott Derrickson-directed film, including the sight of a menacing Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius, a former pupil of the Ancient One who disagrees with some of the tenants of her teachings — like keeping this reality free of supernatural demons.
And we can’t wait to learn the explanation behind the movie’s coolest effect: a shot of New York City literally folding in on itself Inception-style while Strange and his partner-in-magic Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) race along the sides of buildings like Spider-Man.
Guess we’ll find out just how weird the MCU can get when Doctor Strange arrives in theaters on Nov. 4.
