Edgar Ramirez and Robert De Niro Punch Their Way to Glory in 'Hands of Stone' Trailer
Raging Bull star Robert De Niro once again steps into the boxing ring — this time as a trainer rather than a fighter — in this August’s Hands of Stone, a biopic about legendary Panamanian fighter Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez). Watch the exclusive new trailer above.
Duran rose from the streets of Panama’s El Chorrillo slums to eventually become a champion in four different weight classes. However, his most infamous professional moment came during his 1980 Louisiana Superdome rematch against Sugar Ray Leonard, when Duran — having previously taken the title from Leonard in their first bout — abruptly quit the contest by stating “No Mas” (i.e. “No more”). That low point will clearly factor into director Jonathan Jakubowicz’s film, which will follow Duran as he achieves initial athletic fame, as well as tries to rebound from his greatest humiliation opposite Leonard (played by musician-turned-actor Usher), with the aid of world-famous trainer Ray Arcel (De Niro).
Also starring Ellen Barkin, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ruben Blades and John Turturro, Hands of Stone should pack a punch when it dodges its other boxing-movie competition — this November’s Miles Teller vehicle Bleed for This — and makes its premiere on Aug. 26.
