'Genisys' Trailer Premieres Today! Watch the First 4 'Terminator' Trailers Now
The trailer for Terminator: Genisys lands Thursday afternoon, featuring the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the thirty-year-old franchise. In the new reboot, revolutionary leader John Connor (Jason Clarke) sends his best friend Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to save his mother Sarah’s life. However, the timeline has changed, and Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) has become a protégée of the killer cyborg known as the Terminator (Schwarzenegger). Brush up on your Skynet knowledge by watching the first four Terminator trailers below, then come back this afternoon for your first look at Terminator: Genisys.
The Terminator (1984)
The trailer for James Cameron’s original Terminator starts with Arnold Schwarzenegger shooting a bunch of women, in case you’d forgotten that his character started out as a cold-blooded killer. The sci-fi angle is downplayed here: Not until halfway through the trailer do we learn that the Terminator is a robot from the future.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day flipped the script and made the Arnold a hero, but it also gave Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) more opportunities to kick butt. Her son John Connor made his first appearance in this film, played by floppy-haired Edward Furlong, and the evil Terminator (played by Robert Patrick) received a CGI upgrade.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
The 2003 installment fully embraced the sci-fi aspects of the franchise, filling the screen with robots and adding a female Terminator (Kristanna Loken) to the mix. This was the first Terminator movie to be made without James Cameron, though Schwarzenegger gave it one more go before becoming governor of California. Nick Stahl starred as John Connor, whose mother Sarah was revealed to have died of cancer.
Terminator: Salvation (2009)
This is the first Terminator trailer that doesn’t begin with a shot of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was out of the picture by the time McG made this 2009 sequel. (A CG model of his face was applied to bodybuilder Roland Kickinger for the scene involving his character.) Instead, the star is Christian Bale, who played an older, more jaded version of revolutionary John Connor. Rather than the usual heartless Terminator, Sam Worthington played a cyborg who believed himself to be human. (Spoiler alert: He won’t be back.)
