The first full-length trailer for next summer’s eagerly awaited Mad Max: Fury Road has finally been released, with Tom Hardy taking over the eponymous role from the franchise’s original star, Mel Gibson. The fourth film in director George Miller’s saga, which began with 1979’s unexpected hit, had been stuck in development hell for nearly 25 years before revving up again a few years ago.
From the looks of the Fury Road trailer, it was worth the wait. The major plot points sound very familiar: Society has completely broken down, with survivors wandering half-crazed and half-cocked in the desert, and humanity’s last chance coming in the form of the taciturn Max (Tom Hardy) and the rebel Furiosa (Charlize Theron). We’ll see how explosive things get when Mad Max: Fury Roadopens May 15.
