New 'Avatar' Exhibition Aims to Put You on Pandora
In less than three months, you too can visit Pandora — and this time it doesn’t require jacking your brain into a giant blue alien.
The brain trust behind Avatar is about to launch an immersive, interactive experience that aims to take fans inside James Cameron’s extraterrestrial world. Titled Avatar: Discover Pandora (and not to be confused with Walt Disney World’s planned Pandora-themed land or Cirque du Soleil’s Avatar-based traveling show Toruk), the 12,000-square-foot exhibition comes stocked with life-sized creatures (including the soaring Banshees and vicious Viperwolf) and is set to open Dec. 7 in Taipei before embarking on a world tour. Here are the bullet points the producers want you to know about, courtesy of today’s announcement:
—Enter an exhibition curated by the Pandoran Research Foundation where they will leave the 21st century behind and step into a 22nd century world of the Avatar franchise;
—Learn about space travel and the history behind the discovery of Pandora in the Alpha Centauri solar system;
—Explore recreations of Pandora’s most compelling environments showcasing its unique plants and animals and what they can teach us about our own planet;
—Engage in interactive activities based on the culture, language and music of the Na’vi, the 9-foot-plus-tall humanoids who are the indigenous people of Pandora;
—Experience the jewel-like glow of Pandora’s bioluminescent plants and animals;
—Interact with banshees, learn to operate an AMP suit, picture yourself as part of the Avatar

Considering the 2009 film stands as the highest-grossing in Hollywood history with nearly $2.8 billion, it’s surprising that it has taken so long for 20th Century Fox and its partners to figure out a way to spin off Cameron’s vision. But they seem to have cracked the code. As noted above, Avatar: Discover Pandora is among several Avatar-pegged ventures rolling out over the next few years. Cirque’s Toruk launched in 2015; Disney World’s Pandora is set to open in 2017, and Cameron’s four planned sequels are slated to hit theaters beginning in 2018.
