Second 'Ghostbusters' Trailer Has Fresh Banter, More Slimer, and a Really Angry Marshmallow Man
The initial teaser for its upcoming female-led Ghostbusters came under fire from certain segments of the online community — mainly angry guys who couldn’t stand the idea of Ivan Reitman’s 1984 classic being re-envisioned with women. The result was that it quickly became the most disliked trailer in YouTube history. Those angry opponents may never warm to the supernatural comedy, directed by Bridesmaids and Spy helmer Paul Feig. Yet for the levelheaded rest of the movie-loving population, a new trailer has just arrived on Facebook and Twitter with even more absurd specter-catching action. (Watch it above.)
Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones star as the foursome tasked with cleaning up NYC’s ghoul-infested streets – a mission in which they’ll be aided by Chris Hemsworth’s dimwitted assistant and a raft of other notable players, including Michael K. Williams, Andy Garcia, Cecily Strong, and possibly some original cast members as well. As the new spot reveals, Ghostbusters will focus on the team’s efforts to figure out who’s created a device designed to amplify the city’s paranormal phenomena. That mystery is largely spoiled by this second trailer, as is the participation of a couple of the original movie’s most famous undead creatures: the goo-spewing Slimer and the skyscraper-destroying Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, the latter of whom has apparently been reimagined in far angrier form.
Unsurprisingly, the bulk of this follow-up look at Ghostbusters is heavy on both elaborate CGI (which looks sharp) and banter between its uproarious leads (which seems promising). Whether it all translates into an inspired do-over, however, won’t be known until July 15, when the film blasts its way into theaters.
