Moonlight won Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards — but not without some unexpected bonus drama. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, presenting Best Picture to honor the 50th anniversary of Bonnie and Clyde, announced La La Land as the winner, and the acceptance speeches had begun when the mistake was announced. La La Land had won six awards earlier in the evening, after a record-tying 14 nominations. The belated Best Picture award raised Moonlight‘s total to three, following honors for Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. The other major acting awards went to Casey Affleck as Best Actor for Manchester by the Sea, Emma Stone as Best Actress for La La Land, and Viola Davis as Best Supporting Actress for Fences. Damien Chazelle becomes the youngest Best Director winner ever (at 32 and one month) with his award for La La Land. Manchester by the Sea and Hacksaw Ridge won two awards each.
