Marla Mabrey is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day — or at least a crisis of confidence — where our exclusive clip from the new Old Hollywood romance Rules Don’t Apply (watch above) picks up.
“I feel old,” says the character, played by 27-year-old Lily Collins. “I mean wouldn’t you say in Hollywood as a rule when you’ve been here as long as I’ve been, you should’ve already more or less shown what you can do?” she asks the perplexed Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenheich) before rattling off a few other “rules” to making it in showbiz in the 1950s. At this point Frank not only gives her the ego boost she needs, but explains for us the movie title in the process. “You’re an exception,” he tells her. “The rules don’t apply to you.”
In the film, written and directed by Warren Beatty, Marla is among dozens of young actresses iconic producer/entrepreneur/jar collector Howard Hughes (Beatty, in his first acting role in 15 years) keeps “on contract” but not necessarily on the screen. Frank is Hughes’s driver who strikes up a romance with Marla.
In addition to Beatty, Collins, and Ehrenreich (recently cast as Young Han Solo in a standalone Star Wars prequel), the star-studded film also features Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, and Ed Harris.
Rules Don’t Apply opens Nov. 23.
