‘Descendants 2’ in the Works for Disney Channel

A sequel for Disney Channel’s “Descendants” is in the works, Gary Marsh, President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, announced Thursday.

The first film, directed by Kenny Ortega, garnered more than 12.2 million (L+7) total viewers in the United States, including 3.1 million adults aged 18 to 49, making it the No. 1 cable TV movie in nearly three years in that demographic.

Worldwide, “Descendants” has now reached over 32 million total viewers. It also broke viewing records on the WATCH Disney Channel app where it has had 3.3 million video views since July 24.

“Descendants” is a coming-of-age story about the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains which stars Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Mitchell Hope, Kristin Chenoweth and Wendy Raquel Robinson.

Sarah Parriott and Josann McGibbon will serve as the new film’s screenwriters and executive producers.

“By almost every measure — domestically and globally – ‘Descendants’ has already become one of the biggest entertainment properties of the year, and we’re eager to delve deeper into the unfolding mythology of Auradon and Isle of the Lost,” said Marsh.

Melissa de la Cruz will write a second novel as part of the ongoing “Descendants” publishing program, titled, “Return to the Isle of the Lost,” which will be released in May 2016.

Her prequel novel, “The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel,” hit No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller List for 13 of the past 22 weeks. In total, four books in the series have hit the list for a combined 41 weeks.

Moreover, a “Descendants” mobile game will launch in November.
