Scarlett Johansson Is Hollywood's Top-Grossing Actress
Scarlett Johansson is the reigning Queen of Hollywood — at least, according to a list of the highest-grossing actors in box-office history.
Box Office Mojo has updated its ranking of the stars whose films have, cumulatively, been the biggest earners. Johansson outpaces her female rivals by a good measure, coming in at No. 10 with North American receipts of $3,332.5 million — nine spots ahead of the next actress (Cameron Diaz, $3,031.7 million). That makes Johansson the only woman in the top 10 — which is still led by Harrison Ford ($4,871.7 million) — and also, at 31-years-old, the youngest member of the illustrious club. Much of her total is, of course, dominated by the Marvel movies in which she’s long been a key player, starring as super assassin Black Widow, most recently in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War. (She also voiced a character in this year’s smash The Jungle Book.)
As you might expect, Box Office Mojo’s list is top-heavy with stars who’ve participated in Hollywood’s most lucrative franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Dark Knight trilogy, and the Star Wars and The Hunger Games series. That’s why Anthony Daniels (a.k.a. C-3PO) places at No. 15 and Stanley Tucci (a.k.a. Caesar Flickerman) comes in at No. 17, ahead of A-listers like Matt Damon and Will Smith. It’s also why stars like Samuel L. Jackson (a Marvel and Star Wars costar and No. 2), Morgan Freeman (a Dark Knight trilogy costar and No. 3), and Michael Caine (another Dark Knight costar and No. 9) stand toe-to-toe with luminaries like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Johnny Depp. The lesson, it seems, is simple: Get jobs that take place in far away galaxies and/or require you to wear superhero suits.
For Johansson, it’s yet another sign that she’s one of the most bankable female stars working in the movies today. And it suggests that, after she completes work on the still-in-production Ghost in the Shell (an adaptation of the influential 1995 animé feature), Marvel might want to finally give her sultry, crimson-haired superhero her own stand-alone adventure.
