The Drama Gets Amplified in New 'Straight Outta Compton' Trailer
As the new trailer above makes clear, the N.W.A. film Straight Outta Compton is going to be about a lot more than the seminal gangsta rap group’s music. In addition to documenting the rise of hip-hop stars Ice Cube (Cube’s real-life son O’Shea Jackson Jr.), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell), MC Ren (Aldis Hodge), and DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr.), the movie looks to capture the tensions between the African-American community and law enforcement in the early ’90s.
Directed by F. Gary Gray (Set It Off), Compton also tackles the group’s feud with the FBI, and the implications that fracas had on their music careers. As their manager Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti) puts it in response to “a warning letter” the group’s label Ruthless received from the bureau, “This isn’t the Bloods or the Crips — this is a threat from the federal government.”
Straight Outta Compton goes straight into movie theaters Aug. 14.
