'Suicide Squad' Exclusive: Margot Robbie Reveals How She Found Her Inner Harley Quinn

What does it take to play the “most famous female villain in the DC Universe?” That’s the questioned answered by Margot Robbie in the above exclusive clip from the upcoming digital/Blu-ray release of Suicide Squad.

The film, excoriated by critics, but embraced by fans to the tune of $745 million in worldwide ticket sales, follows the malevolent misfits of Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad, a bunch of expendable villains assembled to do the government’s dirty work. And Robbie’s deliriously ditzy, yet dangerous Harley Quinn was a standout.

“Margot really settled into an incredibly difficult role,” director David Ayer gushes in the clip, which is part of a bonus featurette focusing on Harley and the Joker. “To be that spontaneous, and be that humorous, and be that soulful, and be that powerful and tough.”

So how did Robbie find her inner Harley?

“It was important to keep that element that she always wants to be a sidekick to someone, but she’s being real mischievous about it, and that’s what she finds so fun,” the Aussie actress explains of her character, a shrink who goes gaga for the Joker and embraces his chaotic life of crime.

“A lot of the other characters were obviously playing it like, ‘I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be with any of you guys,’ but with Harley, I played it like, ‘Yay! First day of school, so many people to play with. This is going to be great!‘”

“It was like walking into a toy store and being like, ‘What do I do first?'”

Suicide Squad: Extended Cut features both the theatrical release and a new version of the film with 13 minutes of additional footage (including more of Jared Leto’s Joker), as well as several bonus features. The Digital HD version arrives Tuesday; the Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD are on store shelves Dec. 13.
