Superman Unmasks Batman in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' Clip

Things don’t look good for the Caped Crusader in the exclusive sneak preview of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that aired Monday during the fall finale of Fox’s Batman-based crime drama, Gotham.

The 50-second clip appears to come straight from the new film, due in theaters on March 26. In the footage, we see Batman (Ben Affleck) chained among a group of prisoners in some kind of underground cell/bunker in what looks like a desert.

Suddenly, a pissed-looking Superman (Henry Cavill) arrives.

The Man of Steel marches past a row of armed guards (who kneel almost reverently), walks up to the Dark Knight, and promptly removes the cowl.

The two exchange sourpusses and then Superman appears to drop the Bat-mask as the clip fades to black.

The snippet is just an appetizer: a brand new full trailer will debut Wednesday on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT.

It’s been almost five months since we’ve seen new footage of Bats and Supes going head-to-head. The first teaser for the film, which premiered in April, introduced the title characters and pitch-black tone of director Zack Snyder’s superhero match-up: a brooding Batman reluctantly returning to crime-fighting, and a conflicted Superman trying to navigate a world in which he is considered both devil and savior. A second, full-length trailer, released during Comic-Con in July, revealed the source of the DC heroes’ beef: The Wayne Tower building was destroyed during Superman’s fight with Zod in Man of Steel, motivating a retired, battle-worn Batman to step out of the shadows and put the Son of Krypton in his place. The trailer also introduced supporting players Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Alfred the butler (Jeremy Irons), and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Batman v Superman will also mark the film debut of Aquaman, a.k.a. Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), and will reportedly feature cameos from DC heavyweights The Flash/Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), Cyborg/Victor Stone (Ray Fisher), and Batgirl/Barbara Gordon (Jena Malone).

Following on the heels of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman will usher in a new era of DC comic book movies. Suicide Squad, featuring an ensemble of villains including The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), premieres in August 2016. That will be followed in 2017 and 2018 by the two-part Justice League movie, which will bring the DC heroes together Avengers-style, as well as solo movies for Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Affleck’s Batman.
