George Clooney Flies to the Future (And Space Mountain) in Disney's New 'Tomorrowland' Trailer

Tomorrowland is looking like quite the wild ride.

Disney has launched the latest trailer for its top-secret sci-fi fantasy project, which comes from Lost writer/producer Damon Lindelof — who co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Jensen — and The Incredibles director Brad Bird. And in doing so, the studio has finally revealed some important plot details about the mysterious film.

Here’s what we know: Britt Robertson (Cake) stars as Casey, a young girl who finds a pin that contains magical powers; every time she touches it, she’s transported to a strange land where the rules of physics do not seem to apply. George Clooney, meanwhile, plays a disaffected former boy-genius named Frank, who does not take kindly to Casey’s intrusion upon his privacy… until he finds out she has the pin.

The pin, it turns out, transports Casey to an incredible, alternate world of soaring, futuristic skyscrapers and technology. In this new trailer, Frank calls it “a place where the best and the brightest people in the world came together to actually change it.”

That place is Tomorrowland, and in the trailer, eagle-eyed Disney fans will notice the exterior of the beloved ride Space Mountain, which is located in the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland and Disney World.

Casey, it turns out, is a chosen one — an optimistic and scientifically curious teenager who can help restore the promise of Tomorrowland. Presumably, that promise was spoiled by David Nix, the genius played by Hugh Laurie. He’s none too pleased with Casey and Frank, and as we see at the end of the trailer, he’s in hot pursuit of the pair when they blast off in a rocket ship that looks at least a bit like a former center-piece of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland.

The project has been shrouded in secrecy ever since Lindelof and Bird unveiled a mystery box of “artifacts” from Walt Disney’s archive; in a Q&A session on Facebook on Monday, the pair alluded to the influence that both the theme parks and Disney’s “Imagineers” had on the project.

"Brad turned me on to some of the classic Tomorrowland attractions like ‘Carousel of Progress,’" Lindelof said in the chat. "The way the future was viewed from the PAST was really intriguing to us."

Tomorrowland hits theaters on May 22nd.
