Watch Two Generations of Ghostbusters Get Down on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'
Yesterday was “Ghostbusters Day,” a Sony-manufactured holiday to celebrate the anniversary of the original film’s release in 1984. And after delighting fans with a the-gangs-are-all-here selfie, the old and new Ghostbusters casts further stoked anticipation for director Paul Feig’s upcoming reboot by making a joint appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live – during which they discussed their fondness for Ivan Reitman’s classic, admired some fan tattoos, and even broke into some impromptu dancing.
Part of the original cast (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts) spent time with (and reflected on the origins of) their former nemesis, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man — here played by Kimmel’s security guard, Guillermo Rodriguez:
They also took a look at some die-hard fans’ outrageous Ghostbuster tattoos, which covered entire arms and legs — inspiring Murray and Potts to show off their own respective tattoos, which they apparently got while under the influence
Meanwhile, the new cast — Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones — spoke about the difficulty of driving their reconfigured-hearse, the Ectomobile. They briefly addressed the backlash over their reboot, which has drawn controversy for “ruining childhoods,” and whose initial trailers have received surprisingly (and unreasonably) negative reactions.
When it was time for both squads to share the stage, Murray weighed in on his own reaction to the new movie. “I feel like a stepfather to the whole thing,” he said. “There’s no quit in these girls” — all of whom, he made sure to note, were the reason he agreed to participate in the project in the first place.
Things culminated in suitably joyous fashion, with both casts dancing along to the original Ghostbusters theme song — played by none other than the tune’s writer/performer Ray Parker Jr., who was the mystery man in yesterday’s selfie:
The new Ghostbusters hits theaters July 15.
