The Evolution of Miley Cyrus's Hair

From femme and flowy to utterly fierce, Miley Cyrus has gotten more news coverage about her hair than most celebs ever do. The reason why? Music historians will undoubtedly mark Miley Cyrus's drastic platinum pixie cut as the point where her career—and her self—took a turn for the outrageous. Where were you when Miley cut her hair?

So what brought about this severe coif change? Well, it wasn't a modern diva like P!nk who inspired the singer, but a far more classic icon: '60s model Twiggy. Cyrus told the Daily Telegraph, "About six years ago, we did an episode of Hannah Montana where they made my hair look like Twiggy, and every since that, I've wanted to do it. But it was just getting the guts to take a razor and know that your hair doesn't grow back overnight."

In fact, you can see in an old behind-the-scenes interview during her Hannah Montana days, Cyrus points to a photo of Twiggy saying excitedly, "One day I'm gonna cut my hair like that."

So how did she go from having long brown hair to short and platinum? Let's take a look at Miley Cyrus's hair evolution over the years.

Disney Princess

Back in a more innocent time, when the name Hannah Montana was more popular that Miley alone, Cyrus had your typical Disney star hair: long and with just a bit of a curl. Cyrus did get to do some hair play with the various wigs her Hannah Montana character wore, but as for her own hair, she had to keep simple for her "normal" by-day character. The edgiest Cyrus's hair got at this point was when she grew it out to almost waist length!

Teen Queen

As Miley Cyrus grew up, her hair began to reflect a more mature look, playing around with her color. She dyed her hair almost black in 2009 to match her developing rock star style. In 2010, she cut her extremely long hair to a more manageable length and returned to a softer brown color with complementing highlights for a sophisticated look. In 2011, she went progressively lighter, sporting ombre hair at one point.

Twerk Diva

2012 was the year when Miley Cyrus's hair went on a roller coaster ride. Her hair went from relatively long and honey brown in January to spikey and platinum in December of that year. Less hair, less clothes, more fame!

In between, the singer cut cutting and bleaching her hair as the year went on, experimenting with lots of different red carpet styles. From retro curls to a bouffant, Cyrus was definitely testing out the waters when it came to her hair.

Then in August of 2012, everything in Miley's life changed when she debuted her super short, super blonde pixie cut. But not just her hair: Her entire look, her attitude, and her music all seemed to change that day.

She doesn't have much hair anymore, but she sure has had fun with it so far!
