Chart Watch: 'Despacito' ties 'One Sweet Day'

Justin Bieber was just two years old in March 1996 when the Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men smash “One Sweet Day” became the first single in the history of Billboard‘s Hot 100 to log 16 weeks at No. 1. No one equaled that record until this week, as Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” (featuring Bieber) stays on top for a 16th week.

“One Sweet Day” received a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. “Despacito” has a good chance of also receiving a nom in that category.

“Despacito” sold 80K digital copies in the U.S. this week, which puts it on top of Top Digital Songs for the 17th week. That’s the longest run at No. 1 in the history of that chart (which dates to October 2004). “Despacito” is within 100K of overtaking Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” to become the best-selling song of 2017. “Despacito” is up to 2,239,000. “Shape of You” is at 2,332,000.

“Despacito” is in its 32nd week on the Top Digital Songs chart. It’s the first song to rank No. 1 that deep into its run since Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” hit No. 1 in its 47th week on the chart in January 2012.

You may remember that DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One,” which also features Bieber, interrupted “Despacito’s” reign at No. 1 on Top Digital Songs for one week. Thus, this is the 18th consecutive week that Bieber has been featured on the week’s top-selling digital hit — an unprecedented occurrence. (“I’m the One” tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week.)

Bieber has a second song in the top 20 on this week’s Hot 100. “Friends,” a collabo with Bloodpop, debuts at No. 20. “Friends” is Bieber’s first single as a lead artist to crack the top 40 since “Love Yourself” in early 2016. Since then, he has been featured on four top five smashes—Major Lazer’s “Cold Water,” DJ Snake’s “Let Me Love You,” “I’m the One” and “Despacito.”

Bloodpop has co-produced such major hits as Bieber’s “Sorry” and Lady Gaga’s “Million Reasons.” He has also worked with such hit-makers as Madonna, Britney Spears, Fifth Harmony and John Legend.

Top Songs

DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts” (featuring Rihanna & Bryson Tiller) logs its seventh week at No. 2 on the Hot 100. The song includes a prominent sample from Santana’s “Maria, Maria” (featuring the Product G&B), which logged 10 weeks at No. 1 in 2000. Will “Wild Thoughts” also reach No. 1? Stay tuned. “Wild Thoughts” is No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the seventh week.

Cardi B ‘s “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” holds at its No. 3 peak in its eighth week.

Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” rebounds from No. 5 to No. 4 in its 29th week. This matches its highest ranking to date.

Charlie Puth’s “Attention” rebounds from No. 6 to No. 5 in its 18th week. This matches its highest ranking to date.

French Montana’s “Unforgettable” (featuring Swae Lee) drops from No. 4 to No. 6 in its 20th week. The song peaked at No. 3.

Shawn Mendes’s “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” holds at No. 7 in its 18th week. The song peaked at No. 6.

Bruno Mars’s “That’s What I Like” holds at No. 8 in its 32nd week. The song hit No. 1.

Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” holds at No. 9 in its 33rd week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time, which enables it to set a new record for most weeks in the top 10 in the history of the Hot 100. The old record of 32 weeks was held by The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” (featuring Halsey).

Yo Gotti lands his first top 10 hit as “Rake It Up” (featuring Nicki Minaj) leaps from No. 24 to No. 10 in its eighth week. This is Minaj’s 14th top 10 hit. Yo Gotti’s previous biggest hit was “Down in the DM,” which peaked at No. 13 in 2016. The hit featured his BFF, Minaj.

Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road” drops out of the top 10 this week. The smash tops Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart for a record-extending 29th week.

Calvin Harris has his ninth top 20 hit with “Feels” (featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean). Harris has been the lead artist on eight of these hits. “Feels” reached No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart two weeks ago.

Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” enters the Hot 100 based solely on radio airplay. It’s the first single from Swift’s upcoming sixth studio album, reputation. Expect it to vault to No. 1 next week. The lead singles from Swift’s last two albums both hit No. 1.

Top Albums

Brand New, an emo band from Long Island, N.Y., lands its first No. 1 album as Science Fiction enters The Billboard 200 at No. 1. Brand New is the first group from New York to land a No. 1 album since A Tribe Called Quest (from Queens) scored in November with We Got It from Here…Thank You 4 Your Service. Brand New is the first rock band from New York to land a No. 1 album since Vampire Weekend (from New York City) scored in June 2013 with Modern Vampires of the City.

Science Fiction is the third rock album to hit No. 1 in 2017, following Arcade Fire’s Everything Now and Linkin Park’s One More Light. Science Fiction is the first independently distributed album to hit No. 1 since Metallica’s Hardwired…to Self-Destruct in December. Brand New’s album was released on the band’s own Procrastinate! Music Traitors label.

Brand New previously climbed as high as No. 6 with Daisy in 2009. Brand New, which was formed in 2000, has announced that this will be its last album. The band’s current success may lead them to reconsider. If not, they’re going out on top—always a nice way to go out.

Kodak Black achieves his highest ranking to date as Project Baby Two debuts at No. 2. The mixtape is a sequel to the rapper’s first mixtape, 2013’s Project Baby. Kodak Black’s first full-length album, Painting Pictures, hit No. 3 earlier this year.

Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. dips from No. 2 to No. 3 its 19th week. The album has logged four weeks at No. 1.

Neck Deep lands its first top 10 album as The Peace and the Panic debuts at No. 4. The Welsh rock band previously climbed as high as No. 17 with Life’s Not Out to Get You.

Kesha’s Rainbow drops from No. 1 to No. 5 in its second week.

Khalid’s American Teen drops from its No. 4 peak to No. 6 in its 25th week.

DJ Khaled’s Grateful drops from No. 3 to No. 7 in its ninth week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ drops from No. 6 to No. 8 in its 25th week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1. The album is No. 1 on The Official U.K. Albums Chart for the 17th week. That’s the longest run by any album since Adele’s 21 had 23 weeks on top in 2011-12. It’s the longest run by a male solo artist since Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii soundtrack had 18 weeks on top in 1962. (A Presley compilation, The 50 Greatest Hits, has been No. 2 the past two weeks.)

Rapper Dave East lands his first top 10 album as Paranoia: A True Story arrives at No. 9. East previously charted with Kairi Chanel, which debuted and peaked at No. 38 in 2016.

Imagine Dragons’ Evolve dips from No. 9 to No. 10 in its ninth week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2.

Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Moneybagg Yo’s Federal 3X drops from No. 5 to No. 35. SZA’s Ctrldrops from No. 7 to No. 11. 21 Savage’s Issa Album drops from No. 8 to No. 13. Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic dips from No. 10 to No. 15.

The Moana soundtrack drops from No. 14 to No. 18 in its 40th week. The album peaked at No. 2. Moana is No. 1 on Top Soundtracks for the 18th week.

Luke Combs’s This One’s For You rebounds from No. 36 to No. 32 in its 12th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 5. The album is No. 1 on Top Country Albums for the third week.

Eminem’s greatest hits album, Curtain Call: The Hits, holds at No. 43 in its 355th chart week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1 in December 2005. The album returns to No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums, after being bumped out last week by Sam Hunt’s Montevallo. It’s the first rap album to top the catalog chart since N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton two years ago.
