1 dead, 5 injured following two-vehicle wreck in Decatur
DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department (DPD) says a person has died after a two-vehicle wreck Saturday night.
On August 17, at around 11:47 p.m., officers say they were sent to a two-vehicle wreck with injuries on 8th Street SE and 9th Avenue SE in Decatur.
DPD says the drivers of both vehicles and all four passengers were taken to Decatur-Morgan Hospital for treatment. They say a 16-year-old passenger succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Decatur High School confirmed the 16-year-old female was an 11th-grade student and took some classes at their Career Academies. DHS made a statement about the incident:
“We have extra counselors on site today available for students and staff as needed. Counselors are also available at Career Academies of Decatur as she was a part-time student there as well.
She was a great student who was well liked by her teachers and fellow students. She was involved in the Cosmetology program at CAD and was constantly working to better herself.”
Decatur High School Principal Jeremy Mitchell
The incident is currently under investigation.
