11 suspects out on bond less than a week after Mobile Police’s latest drug operation

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Six days after the Mobile Police Department concluded their latest narcotics operation, 11 of the 22 suspects arrested are out on bond.

Operation Cleaning the Corridor took three months to complete. While six suspects were targets in the operation, MPD’s Narcotics and Vice Unit arrested 22 people in the Highway 90 Corridor.

“They’ll be right back out here this weekend probably,” Clyde Rich, who lives along Highway 90, said. “How many of them are from this neighborhood? Probably none.”

While most of the arrests were on drug-related charges, two of them were on prostitution charges.

“We see the girls walking, and then we see their pimps driving along behind them,” Rich said. “People actually go crazy with whatever it is they’re taking.”

Capt. Mathew James, Captain of MPD’s 2nd Precinct, said his team often gets into the cycle of arresting the same people over and over. Some suspects, according to James, are often out on bond for other charges when they find themselves on the wrong side of the law again.

“Jails can only hold so many people,” James said. “I wish we could see higher bonds in a lot of cases. A lot more than we do.”

After multiple complaints from surrounding neighborhoods, the narcotics unit shifted its attention to the Beverly Motel and the Bama Motel on Highway 90. James said it’s not unusual to respond to these motels as he said the blighted properties often attract bad actors.

“It behooves those owners and managers to take initiatives to curb that problem,” James said.

If motel owners and managers don’t take action on their own, James said police are forced to act.

However, local government leaders have a few tricks up their sleeves to shut down criminal activities at these businesses.

“These low-cost motels are sort of a problem in the area,” District 4 Councilman Ben Reynolds said.

The operation happened in Reynolds’ district.

Reynolds said the city council has the authority to revoke a business license or declare the structure a public nuisance if it meets certain criteria.

“All those things are on the table,” Reynolds said. “If we’re going to clean up this area, I think it starts with getting these bad actors out of the area.”

WKRG made contact with the Bama Motel.

While a Bama Motel employee said she was shocked those police raided the property on Wednesday, she said she’s glad police could get suspected drug dealers off the property.

WKRG attempted to reach the Beverly Motel several times but has not received an answer.
