17-year-old critical after being hit by garbage truck on Rhode Island Street
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 17-year-old Buffalo teen is in critical condition after he was hit by a garbage truck on Rhode Island Street near 14th Street on Wednesday morning, according to Buffalo police.
The teen was hit just before 8:20 a.m. when the truck backed up and hit the teen.
He was taken to Oishei Children’s Hospital to be treated for injuries.
Superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools Dr. Tonja Williams Knight provided a statement Wednesday, saying she met with the teen’s family at the hospital that afternoon.
“The entire Buffalo Public Schools community is sending love, thoughts, and support to one of our exceptional Buffalo Public Schools students,” she said.
Police said the sanitation vehicle is in custody at the Seneca Street garage. The 46-year-old sanitation driver has been suspended without pay pending further review of the incident, according to police.
