2 more Springfield elementary schools evacuated due to threats

Two Springfield City School District elementary schools were evacuated Monday due to unspecified threats and information received from local police, a district spokesperson said in a statement.

Students at Simon Kenton Elementary School and Kenwood Elementary School were evacuated Monday and transferred to an alternate location. The district conducted a controlled release of the students to dismiss them to their parents, a district spokesperson said in a statement.

These two elementary schools are the fifth and sixth Springfield City School buildings to be targeted by threats in the past week. The school district did not share specifics on the nature of the threats or their motivation in its statement.

Monday marks the third school day disrupted by threats since the city's Haitian immigrant population was thrust into the national spotlight last week by prominent conservative figures, like former president Donald Trump and his running mate Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who spread debunked claims that the immigrants were eating pets and wildlife.

Since last week, threats have derailed a local cultural festival, moved classes online for local colleges, closed down county and city buildings and forced elementary school students to be evacuated from their schools.
