23-year-old charged with murder in fatal shooting of grandparents in Mt. Hermon

MT. HERMON, La. (WGNO) — A man is being charged with the murder of his grandparents after a 911 call led to his arrest in the Mt. Hermon area on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, around 2 p.m. on July 3, a deputy responded to a call regarding a shooting. It was discovered that 23-year-old Colby Stokes had approached his neighbor and allegedly admitted to shooting his grandparents, to which the neighbor responded by calling 911 and waiting with Stokes for police to arrive.

Upon deputies’ arrival, it was found that two victims, later identified as Carley and Beverly Stokes, had been shot. Carley was pronounced dead at the scene while Beverly was taken to North Oaks Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Stokes reportedly admitted to killing his grandparents in a recorded interview with detectives and was booked into the Washington Parish Jail where he is being held on the following charges.
Two counts of first-degree murder.
Convicted felon in possession of firearm.
Second-degree aggravated battery.
Cruelty to animals.
