BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Three Baton Rouge police officers were fired and one officer resigned after being formally charged in connection to allegations of misconduct.

Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said Lt. Troy Lawrence, Cpl. Todd Thomas and Cpl. Douglas Chutz was terminated, effective Friday, Sept. 20. He said a fourth officer, Officer Martele Jackson, resigned lieu of termination.

“After careful examination of the facts, it is clear to me that these four Baton Rouge Police Department Officers acted outside their training and violated the policies,” Morse said in a letter making the announcement.

He said disciplinary hearings were held on Aug. 12 regarding a 2023 complaint alleging a body camera was thrown away.

“These four Officers had careers that spanned over many years of law enforcement service. However, irrespective of how illustrious an Officer’s career may be or seem, there are policy violations that cannot and will not be tolerated,” said Morse.

The police chief said he foresees appeals to be filed at civil service and the 19th Judicial District Court after discussions with attorneys representing officers.
