3 charged after attempt to deposit $117K fraudulent check in Orchard Park
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Three people were charged with issuing a bad check, among other charges, after they allegedly tried to deposit a fake $117,310 check at a bank on Clark Street, according to Orchard Park police.
Police said John Cain, 58, was in possession of a fraudulent check when they arrived at Community Bank at 5 Clark St. Two nearby suspects, Jaylin Dorsey, 24, and Devin Hibbert-Day, 22, were interviewed by police and determined to be involved in the attempt, according to police.
Cain, Dorsey and Hibbert-Day were found to be in possession of multiple stolen checks, credit cards and a check printer.
They were all charged with the following:
issuing a bad check
second-degree criminal possession of stolen property
first-degree identity theft
second-degree attempted grand larceny
second-degree criminal impersonation
They were all arraigned and Cain and Dorsey were released on their own recognizances. Hibbert-Day was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center.
Orchard Park Chief of Police Patrick Fitzgerald said attempting to deposit fraudulent checks isn’t a rare occurrence.
“This is really something where we’ve seen this in the past and I think employees of banks have received additional training because of these attempts and are alert now to what to look for and ultimately when to involve the police,” he said.
The investigation remains ongoing. Fitzgerald is asking the public to report any suspicious activity.
“Our recommendation is just to be vigilant and when you send a check through the mail, following it up to make sure that the person you were sending it to or the business that you were sending it to in fact has received it,” he said. “When it’s determined that that check hasn’t been received, canceling that check, stop payment on that check as quickly as possible.”
