5 Buffalo churches to submit proposals for local landmark status
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Five local church complexes are set to submit proposals for local landmark designation to the Buffalo Common Council next week.
The following R.C. church complexes are seeking landmark status:
St. Rose of Lima (Parker Avenue, Parkside Avenue)
St. John Kanty (Swinburne Street)
St. Thomas Aquinas (Abbott Road, Tamarack Street)
Our Lady of Perpetual Help (O’Connell Avenue)
St. Stanislaus (Peckham Street, Fillmore Avenue, Wilson Street)
The first four churches listed are set to close or merge following official “rightsizing and reshaping” decisions by the diocese earlier this month. St. Stanislaus will remain open, however, St. John Kanty is expected to merge with it.
Officials hope to safeguard the historical significance of the five complexes and will submit proposals to the common council next Tuesday. A final vote will take place at a later time.
