600 hurricane victims receive donations in Thibodaux

THIBODAUX, La. (WGNO) — Hundreds of people lined North Canal Boulevard to get their vehicles filled with food and supplies at Thibodaux Family Church.

“I’ve been here since 8 a.m.,” said storm victim Kionne Carter.

Carter was among the people who waited in line for three hours for the distribution drive that served 600 families affected by Hurricane Francine.

“We got a phone call from the Thibodaux Police Department that Catholic Charities and Second Harvest Food Bank were looking for a place that they can distribute food, and so we’ve done this through the years with hurricanes,” said Thibodaux Family Church Pastor Duane Bland. “We’re normally the pod site for North Lafourche, and they didn’t open anything, so we were free.”

Second Harvest Food Bank also partnered with Rouses Market to replenish what was lost in the storm.

“It’s going to help me, especially the vegetables, because I just had my last treatment two days ago, and I had lost all my fresh vegetables,” said donations recipient Kathleen Diggs.

In addition to the produce, volunteers distributed milk, nonperishable food items, cleaning products and paper towels.

“We were out of power for four days, and we lost everything in the refrigerator, and we had water inside our home, but other than that, we’re blessed,” Carter said.

The church’s pastor is also feeling grateful.

“It’s just a delight to serve the community, to be part of a healthy, vibrant city, so I’m honored,” Bland said.

Those who received donations say it’s the community that helps people bounce back from a hurricane.

“I donate time for helping people during the storm as well, so I appreciate everything they do,” said donations recipient Sheila Sewire.

Another distribution drive will be held Friday at the Old Delchamps parking lot, located at 836 Grand Caillou Road in Houma, from 9 a.m. until supplies last.
