Amputated Fingers Prompt Massive Outdoor Furniture Recall

An estimated 70,000 pieces of outdoor furniture have been recalled following reports of finger injuries associated with their use.

The recall was issued voluntarily on June 20 by Cinmar, LLC, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Cinmar identified the impacted products as the Frontgate Resort Collection Newport chaise lounge chairs, which the company said were sold in aluminum and teak.

The furniture can pose a risk of injury when the backrest is adjusted as someone is sitting on the chaise, which can cause the backrest to “unexpectedly descend with force, posing finger crushing and amputation hazards,” a press release announcing the recall said.

As of June 20, three injuries were reported in connection with use of the chaises. One person required surgery after their finger was crushed, and two other individuals required partial finger amputations as a result of their injuries, according to the CPSC.

People who have one or more of the recalled chaises have been urged to stop using them “immediately” until they are able to obtain from Cinmar the tools needed to fix the problem.

“Consumers must submit a photo of the chaise to Cinmar to receive a free repair kit, including a new backrest support bar and assembly instructions,” the CPSC advised.

The aluminum chaises (SKU 67333) were sold in sets of two in architectural bronze, champagne silver, cobalt, matte black and matte white. The teak chaises (SKU 166218) were also sold in sets of two in finishes described as weathered and natural.

All of the impacted products were estimated to be 51 inches long and 31 inches wide with a mesh backrest that can be adjusted to four varying positions. The back of each chaise sold featured the “FRONTGATE” name printed in black text.

All of the impacted chaises were sold between February 2014, and December 2023, through the Frontgate website and catalogue or at Frontgate store locations in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas. The price points for the chaises ranged between $600 and $1,400.
