I-84 to close for five miles over weekend for trash collection, graffiti removal
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Don’t forget: Nearly five miles of Interstate 84 will close in both directions this weekend as crews clean trash and graffiti from the area.
The closure will impact the entire stretch of I-84 between I-5 and I-205 from Saturday, July 13 at 11 p.m. through Sunday, July 14 at noon. Crews will also close several I-5 northbound lanes, which will be closed over the Marquam Bridge with traffic diverted onto I-405 northbound.

PBOT crews will additionally close the bridges over the highway one at a time — including the Congressman Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge and the bridges at Northeast 12th Avenue, 21st Avenue and 28th Avenue.
All on-ramps to I-84 will also close. However, the I-5 on-ramps from the Morrison Bridge and North Weidler Street will remain open.
The Oregon Department of Transportation said the closure will allow their workers to safely collect the trash and remove graffiti without inconveniencing commuters with multiple partial closures. They will also be able to carry out other maintenance work — such as electrical work, sign maintenance, patching pavement, cleaning drains and more.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience during this 12-hour closure,” said ODOT Manager Rian Windsheimer. “This is a rare opportunity to have safe access to perform clean-up work in difficult areas and we plan to take full advantage.”

More than 100 workers from ODOT, Union Pacific Railroad, TriMet, the Portland Bureau of Transportation, Metro and Multnomah County will clean along the corridor from west to east.
TriMet will also adjust its schedules while traffic is impacted. The MAX Blue, Green, and Red lines will be disrupted for part of Sunday, July 14, between NE Seventh Avenue and the Gateway/NE 99th Avenue Transit Center.
Shuttle buses will be available to those who depend on these closed stations through 6 p.m. on Sunday, and Bus Line 70’s route for 12th/NE 33rd Avenue will detour off the NE 12th Avenue bridge until 12 p.m. on Sunday.
Gov. Tina Kotek will host a press conference with clean up partners in Sullivan’s Gulch at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, July 14.
