CNN, ABC and National Geographic are among the top winners at night one of the 2024 News & Documentary Emmy Awards on Wednesday.

ABC World News Tonight With David Muir took home the award for outstanding live news program, while CNN’s The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper won outstanding recorded news program. CNN also scored 10 additional wins, while ABC collected four additional wins (ABC News had eight total wins, including three credited to Hulu) and National Geo landed five wins.

Aj+ Report’s It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive, also won outstanding hard news feature story: shortform, despite calls for the Emmy nomination to be revoked. The journalist, Bisan Owda, who filmed it was criticized for her connection to a group the U.S. considers a terrorist organization. However, NATAS CEO and president Adam Sharp defended the nomination.

In response the controversial nominee’s win, nonprofit entertainment industry organization Creative Community for Peace executive director Ari Ingel criticized the honor and what it says about the news business.

“The NATAS decision to honor Owda effectively celebrates PFLP [Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine] propaganda and condones terrorism,” Ingel said. “Instead of recognizing one of the respectable journalistic pieces documenting the war in Gaza, they chose to applaud a political activist affiliated with the PFLP. There is clearly a significant blind spot within the journalistic community — if you support terrorism against Israelis, NATAS will happily recognize your content as award-worthy. This is a sad day for journalism. And a troubling omen for the future of the industry.”

CCFP, which had objected to Owda’s nomination, is made up of prominent entertainment industry members who seek to promote the arts as a means to peace and to counter antisemitism within the industry and galvanize support against the cultural boycott of Israel.

The awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, handed out Wednesday night recognized winners in the news categories. Winners will be announced in the documentary categories during a ceremony Thursday at the Palladium Times Square in New York City.

“Those who shine a light on inconvenient truths, give voice to the voiceless, or simply report documented facts are far too often punished through efforts to demonize and delegitimize such essential work,” Sharp wrote in a statement. “On these two nights, we do the vital opposite. The Emmys celebrate those who face these headwinds to bring important stories to our screens and, in turn, provide a vision of excellence that inspires the next generation to follow.”

The presenters at Wednesday’s ceremony included Jim Axelrod (CBS News), Nada Bashir (CNN), Jamelle Bouie (The New York Times), Maria Antonieta Collins (Univision), Joe Fryer (NBC News), Amna Nawaz (PBS NewsHour), Rachel Scott (ABC News), Del Walters (Scripps News) and Rand Morrison (executive producer, CBS Sunday Morning).

Jane Pauley, Emmy-winning journalist/anchor/author, also received the Lifetime Achievement Award Wednesday, and Alex Gibney, Academy Award-winning documentarian/director/producer, is set to receive the honor Thursday.
