ABQ mayor backs Coors Blvd and Atrisco NW site for indoor sports complex
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For years, local politicians have been working to create a massive indoor sports complex in Albuquerque. Now, the city says they’ve found a viable site.
“Like a lot of Albuquerque families, our kids play sports, and every year it gets clearer that there aren’t enough places to play,” Mayor Tim Keller said in a press release. “A new complex, especially one that could host tournaments, would be a huge asset for our city. It’s time for us to make this dream a reality.”
Two dozen Albuquerque schools have new principals
The city says the project could be built on the empty lot at the southwest corner of Coors Boulevard and St. Josephs Drive Northwest. That would put the facility between Coors and Atrisco Drive NW, near St. Pius X High School.
The parts of the site have been empty for decades, and property records show Red Shamrock 12 LLC owns the site. At one point, a grocery store was proposed for the property, but that was never built. Ava Montoya, a spokesperson for the city says there have been “very productive” talks with the property owner.
The idea for a multi-use sports complex was championed by the late City Councilor Ken Sanchez. He passed away in 2020, but current City Councilor Louie Sanchez is now behind the project.
“This project has long been the vision of our beloved late City Councilor Ken Sanchez”, City Councilor Louie Sanchez said in a press release. “His foresight got this project in motion years ago and I am honored work with the community and the Mayor to help get it over the finish line.”
