:: Theo James, UNHCR goodwill ambassador & actor
"Today, I am honored to be appointed as a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. UNHCR helps protect and support refugees all over the world to build better lives. My own connection with refugees is very personal. During World War Two, my grandfather fled Nazi controlled Greece and travelled by boat to reach safety in Syria. His story told me that anyone can become a refugee. The challenges my grandfather faced all those years ago, leaving behind everything familiar and starting afresh in a new place, are the same challenges millions around the world are facing now. That's why I'm driven to use my voice to advocate for those displaced by war, conflict and persecution. I want refugees everywhere to feel seen, supported and empowered to rebuild their lives and achieve their potential. I'd love you to join me in supporting with refugees."
James, known for television series "The Gentlemen" and "The White Lotus", has supported UNHCR since 2016, and traveled to Greece, France and Jordan to meet with asylum-seekers and refugees, the agency said.
In a video, James said he was "honored" to take on the role and drew on his own family's experience.
Last week, UNHCR said the number of people forcibly displaced stood at a record 117.3 million as of the end of last year, warning that this figure could rise further without major global political changes.
