AgriLife hires honey bee expert in East Texas

OVERTON, Texas (KETK) – Texas A&M has hired a honey bee specialist and assistant professor, both for the AgriLife Extension Service and for the university.

According to a release, Garrett Slater, Ph.D., has been hired to support hobby and commercial beekeepers in the state. AgriLife said that the position will support their growing beekeeping program and is supported by state funding from the Texas Beekeepers Association.

According to the organization, Slater has 18 years of beekeeping experience, with 10 years of commercial beekeeping and pollination services in North Dakota. AgriLife said that Slater’s position will be headquartered in Overton at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center.

AgriLife said that Slater’s position will be 75% for AgriLife Extension and 25% research, where he will support beekeepers across the state including large metropolitan areas.

“Texas is seeing a dramatic increase in beekeeping, and I was hired to create an AgriLife Extension program to support both new and advanced beekeepers,” Slater said. “I am here to educate and inform them with applied science and research.”
